Biomechanical targets

AAM off piste in Iceland

AAM off piste in Iceland

There is a result to create at the end of each curve, a bio-mechanical result to create. A target.

You need to train yourself to hit this target accurately, every time, on simple, well-prepared pistes, then on more challenging pistes, and finally in simple off-piste conditions.

This biomechanical target has five specific components, each of which needs to be trained for and integrated with your performance.

The components of the biomechanical target blend to form a single, compound target that can guide and shape your performance.

Centred balance in the high load phase of the arc
This resolves the forces of skiing so that you remain balanced and strong.

Accurate flexion in the high load phase of the arc,
to provide pressure control and suspension. Flex accurately towards centred balance, with good posture. Beware of flexing rearward onto your heels

Progressive edging/tilting movements, with maximum edging in the high load phase of the arc. This allows the shape of the ski to provide the curve that will control you. It also enables you to balance the large lateral forces generated during the curve, in the same way that you balance your bicycle when you turn.

Skis turned progressively across your direction of travel, or more specifically, across the line of your momentum. This provides control of speed and requires accurate coordination. Don’t try to force your skis around, using an abrupt twisting movement! That would almost certainly trip you up. Allow the shape of the skis to create the curve for you. Good short radius turn performance will bring the skis across your direction of travel and give you the control you need.

Preparation of the pole plant so that the pole is in place, ready to use, without interruption or delay. Begin moving the pole forwards slowly, almost from the beginning of the turn, so that it arrives just in time to be used at the end of the turn.

These five components, blended together, help you to produce accurate and sophisticated movement patterns.

Blending these movements into a seamless, flowing performance.
